To win the Democratic nomination for president, Senator John F. Kennedy first had to defeat his opponents in the primary. This photo was taken in Wisconsin, where he faced an early test. Kennedy won 56 percent of the popular vote in the state’s primary, but it was not the significant margin he had hoped for. When asked by one of his sisters what it meant, he responded, “We have to do it all over again. We have to win every one of them . . . all the way to the convention.”
This image highlights two accomplished photographers. George Tames, a longtime correspondent for the New York Times, took this picture. The portrait in the center is by Jacques Lowe, Kennedy’s photographer during both his campaign and his presidency.
